Chapter Fourteen
Rolf must have been trained directly by the gods. No matter how hard I tried, no matter what feint I used to set him up, he always blocked or parried my attacks. He never even tried to hit me back, but simply allowed me to tire myself out trying to hit him. He had a smirk on his face the entire time, and he knew exactly what I was going to do as though he was in my mind.
Eventually, I stopped and sat down, breathing heavily. Rolf sat next to me, hardly breathing at all. “You will have to be creative against a fighter who knows hand-to-hand combat. When a stalemate is reached and no punches can be landed, the next available fighting technique is grappling or wrestling. You have the basics of hand-fighting down, but now it is time to learn grappling. One more reminder though, you can’t fight angry. You were too aggressive and I could have knocked you out several times. Use caution in a fight; it is much easier to fight defensively than it is to fight offensively. Time for lunch.”
So we went and ate and I rested throughout the small meal. I knew after lunch, once again, I’d be learning something brand new and I’d have to really focus to attain the new skill.
Even though it was snowing, Rolf had me strip down into my undergarments and I used all of the willpower I had to try and prevent myself from shivering. He spoke, “When you reach a stalemate, the object is to gain advantage by knocking your opponent to the ground and getting on him, keeping the fight at close quarters. You can charge him swiftly, though make sure you’re in control and not reckless. The objective is to neutralize his hands. You must use your legs, hips, and stomach muscles to create leverage, allowing yourself the opportunity to throw him to the ground.”
“Yes, sir.”
“We will start from where we left off when you were throwing punches and I will demonstrate on you.”
That is exactly what Rolf did, though he explained everything after he pinned me and restrained me on the ground. He stepped towards me and ducked under a swing, tying up my arms with his and throwing me to the ground. I stood up and he showed me at an extremely slow pace what it was he did and then we tried again. He showed me several different techniques to neutralize an opponent’s arms, though he did not get to grappling on the ground and neutralizing the opponent there. That would begin tomorrow.
The sun was setting when Rolf said we were done. As usual, he did not say a word on the walk back to the house, and we both admired the winter clouds covering the darkening sky. During the time I’d been here, I learned to appreciate the snow and the winter. And, if truth be told, I enjoyed snow much more than rain.
The past several months went by so quickly and I had already learned so much.
